Art. Design. Fabrication.
Art.
01An idea takes shape
Michael’s sculptural practice is our starting point. Material, form and the way an object feels in a space guide the work.
Design.
02Form finds a purpose
We translate that exploration into custom furniture and millwork, moving from sketches and renderings to technical drawings.
Fabrication.
03The idea becomes real
Prototyping, material selection and careful making bring the design into the world. Each detail is resolved in the workshop.
Install.
04The work finds its place
We carry the work from the workshop into its final setting. Care and attention carried through to the finished space.
From material to space.
Studio Fortenberry is a design and fabrication studio based in the Brooklyn Navy Yard. We make custom furniture and millwork, and carry that work through installation.
Rooted in Michael Fortenberry’s sculptural practice, spatial design, and a deep respect for material, the studio brings fine-art sensitivity to commissioned work for interior designers, architects, and residential and commercial clients.
From initial sketches and renderings to technical drawings, prototyping, and final fabrication, our process is defined by clarity, precision, and a lasting commitment to quality.
Grounded in decades of material exploration and exhibition-based practice, the studio carries forward a belief that design is not separate from art — it is an extension of it. Every object, surface, and structure is considered not only for how it functions, but for how it feels, endures, and shapes experience.
